"Navigator's Day - the apt description of the race day recognizing the challenges of the day was provided by Geoff McKnight aboard Wilby Whitt's Misty. The short 7.2nm course was designed for forecasted light/medium winds from the Southwest, expected to shift to the South after the 11:00am start. The course, consisting of 13 legs with 12 mark roundings, started first in the western part of Cumberland Sound, then finishing with several triangles in the Sound north of the finish line at the mouth of the Amelia River.
16 sailors raced on 4 boats, as many club members are away or had other plans for the day. The wind shift was late in arriving, and the wind dissipated over the course of the race. There was some close racing between Bill Kavanaugh on Tiger Tale and Justin Pelham-Webb on Valkrie. With the ebb current at the start becoming slack mid-race, these two lighter and faster boats led the way for the race ahead of Misty and Gary Sander's Salty Sally.
After almost two hours of racing, Tiger Tale finished 6 minutes 15 seconds ahead of Valkyrie on corrected time, followed by Misty 20 minutes later, with Salty Sally wrapping up the race. Full results and several photos are available by clicking on the links below.
